The First Emperors of Ancient China
The Three Sage Kings of ancient China were Suiren, Fuxi and Shennong. They made personal sacrifices to improve the lives of the people. Today they are remembered for the many unique contributions to the Chinese people and mankind in general.
Suiren was the first and he supposedly lived about 18,000 years ago. His greatest contribution was the art of making fire by drilling wood. With this skill mankind could create fire on demand enabling mankind to eat cooked food. It also enabled mankind to keep warm and ward of wild animals.
Many people remember Fuxi for creating the Bagua or Eight Trigram which became the basis of the Yi Qing or the Book of Changes. However not many remember that he taught people to domesticate animals and lay traps to catch fish, birds and other wild animals. Even lesser people know that he invented marriage and the laws that governs it as well a 35 strings musical instrument.
Shennong alias Yandi was credited with the invention of the rake, spade, plough and sickle. He taught people how to grow five types of cereals and he formulated barter trade. He was also credited for modifying Fuxi's 35 strings musical instrument into a 5 strings one.
Shennong tasted hundreds of wild berries to find remedies for illnesses. He was constantly poisoned and eventually died from one that proved too much for him.
Huangdi, Zhuanxu, Diku, Yao and Shun succeeded The Sage Kings. They were collectively known as the Five Legendary Emperors.
Huangdi had strong management skills. He knows how to select the right people and motivate them to rule the country and to come out with innovations that benefit the people. Many great achievements were attributed to him.
With the help of his many talented subjects, Huangdi developed a written language for the Chinese people. He also commissioned the compilation of The Yellow Emperor's Medicine Classic which became the foundation of Chinese Medicine today. Finally we also developed a Farmer's or Chinese Solar Calendar.
Huangdi was a man of peace and did not like war. During his rule, there was peace, stablility and prosperity in his kingdom.
Huangdi was succeeded by Zhuanxu. Zhuanxu was not his son but he was chosen over many of Huangdi's son due to his ability. Among Zhuanxu's contribution was bring law and order to his people and consolidating the power of the central authority.
Like his great grandfather, Diku who succeeded Zhuanxu, was a benevolent king who took care of the interest of his people. To better manage the growing population, he created additional ministry with properly demarcated duties such as the Ministry of Land, Water, Metal Ores, Fire and Forestry. He conducted personal visits to ensure that that the country was well run.
Diku's son Yao succeeded him. Like his father he was benevolent and industrious. He made some major changes to the calendar and altered the timing of planting that greatly increase the yield.
Shun was Yao's son in law. Although his mother died when he was very young, and his step mother and father ill-treated him, he remained filial to them. His great virtue helped him to gain fame and he was summoned to King Yao's service at 30. He eventually married King Yao's daughter.
Shun drafted the five rules of etiquette and others rules and regulations which the dukes and princes had to observed. He also divided the country into 12 states with each having its own administrator. He continued to implement changes at the administrative level and set up the department of rites, music, farming, mulberry planting, works, water and land.
Shun was succeeded by Yu who founded the Xia Dynasty. Yu was famed for his ability to control flooding but that is another story for another time.
