The Secret To My Golf Game
Most anyone who takes up the game of golf likes to receive tips from experienced golfers. This makes good sense, and can shave some time off your learning curve. I personally can listen to them for hours at a time. I like hearing about and trying out new techniques to see if it improves my own personal game. I tried out and added many things to my game, and after years of staying average, I realized that there was one main ingredient that was necessary for success.
But even with all these tips, I felt I was missing something. In my gut I knew that something was out there that I needed, but I could not figure out what it was. I tried just about everything I read about or anybody would share with me to improve my game. I even enlisted some personal training in order to find my way and feel like I was as competitive as anybody else.
I entered a lot of tournaments, and I faired quite well in some, and I also tanked in a few. But I had determination, which is a quality that all golfers must have. Another of my friends recommended his best golf instruction book which I read and took to heart. And while I learned a few things, I still was not satisfied deep in my gut. I was still searching.
I felt inside that whatever I was searching for, would give me that extra needed edge. A new vein of confidence that just was not there. In my mind I was almost obsessed with it, trying to bring it to the front of my brain where I could finally see it, and add it in with all my other knowledge, and be the golfer I desired to be. I played the toughest courses, in order to gain skills some others may lack.
It finally got to the point where my game leveled out. Some days were a little better, some days a little worse, but basically I stayed around the same skill level and ability. It made me stale, and was a bit discouraging. I remember lying awake nights wondering what this thing that haunted me could be. But nothing ever came. So I thought I was probably as good as I could ever be, and had to come to grips with it.
Finally, I decided just to let it go. Forget this thing that nagged me day in and day out. The days passed as I tried to push it out of my mind. I was tired of being troubled about it all the time. I went out on the porch one day to read my paper on the swing. I saw some little children in the next yard playing. They had dug up a pretty blue marble from the ground, and they were all excited about finding it. Then, they took turns holding it and making wishes while they held it. A light came on suddenly in my brain.
They reminded me of when I was a little boy, and the kids I played with. We always had a lucky charm of some sort with us. I watched them making their wishes, and I knew then exactly what the missing ingredient was. It was belief. I went to a tournament the very next day, and before I hit the first ball, I raised my rhodium plated wedding ring up to my lips, gave it a kiss, and turned in the best performance of my career.
